I've not posted in weeks. Mostly because I wasn't in the mood for a I'm a bit blue post....again.

Summer has been fun, hot and a challenge this year. Fortunately healthwise we've all been pretty good.

But I had another of those Roots and Wings things come up again. *sigh*

For those that may be newer friends, one of my main mantra's as a mom is that it's our job to give our children Roots and Wings. Roots so they always know that home is here for them. No matter what they do, this is home. And Wings so that when it's time...they can fly on their own. I've said good-bye to my oldest many times and for many reasons. When he went to college for the first time...when he went to Iceland to study for 6 weeks...when he went to Paris to study for 1 year and when he went to Lille, France to work for a year. In between those there were the several times I put him on an airplane to go for this or that or another thing. In 2013 he moved out from our house for the first time. It was tough but nothing compare to this summer.

At the end of August he and his gf of several years moved to Portland, OR. Which puts him no longer a 1 hour drive away, but a 31 hour drive away. It's a good move for them and they're doing great out there. But it's hard. He's been good, calling to check in every Sunday. But it's not the same. Life changes...children grow up...

Our youngest is still in the area and we see him frequently, which I love. But now he's talking about trying to get transferred in his company. That could mean Chicago or San Jose, CA. But I'll play the ostrich on that one until the end of the year - which is when he plans to start the ball rolling.

Can I just say that successfully raising 2 independent children is a blessing and a curse. lol

Roots and wings....in the end I guess it's the best thing we can do for our children - even if it sometimes makes you cry.

Many of you know that I'm part of the beta team for femmequixotic's Tales from the Special Branch series.

Well as of last evening, the third book in the series is complete. It's seriously brilliant and includes some really cool magic and Dementors and ghosts. And of course Draco and Harry. There are also amazing side characters you'll recognize (Blaise, Pansy, Ron, Hermione and assorted Ministry officials) - but there are also a host of characters she's created for the series - a love interest for Blaise named Jake Durant and someone we're not quite sure how she fits into Pansy's life - Althea Whitaker.

The characters are wonderfully developed and the story-line is captivating and amazing.

The series starts with prequel written as a one-shot: Can't Get You Out of my Head [NC-17, 14.5k].

Oh and not only is femmequixotic an amazing author - she also created this story board for Dare to Think.

I know I've not been around lately, but I lost a very dear friend this weekend. It was sudden, although she was ill so we knew it was a possibility. But it reminded me of the frailty of life and how I need to be better at staying in touch with all of you.

So I wanted to say how much I appreciate every single one of you and that my life is a better place because you're all part of it.

What a month already!!

Wednesday was the end of the month. I stayed late prepping for the first of the month and having to do all my coupon books and contracts. Even tho I stayed late, I felt good about where I was at and thought Thursday wouldn't be too bad...

Cue Thursday/first of the month. I'm flying along at work, having put in a long prep day Wed...and then we have a flood in the office. I'm talking water an inch deep on our utility room floor and seeping out onto the carpets. I spent 3 hours trying to sop up water by hand while Doc tried to unclog the drains. *I work for an orthodontist and we thing the alginate we use for impressions was clogging the drain* So when I should have been out of work at 1ish....I walked out the door at 4:30. Completely exhausted.

Cue Friday. Work wasn't too bad, except for only having 1 working restroom. So the plumber that was supposed to show on Sat morning - called and came Friday about 12:30. Which was fine. So after patients I have to finish everything that I didn't get done for 1st of month. *sigh* Again, should have left about 1ish...left at 3.

Needless to say, my muscles are still screaming at me for bending over for 3 hours and wringing out towels into a bucket. *sigh* Getting old is hell.

Anyway...how are you all?? There's so many good fests coming up - I'm struggling with what to sign up for. Mpreg for sure *since I'm a co-mod* but Remix is really calling to me. Decisions, decisions....

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

I left lots and lots of comments on things in the last week trying to get caught up on holiday reading. I consider this one done.

Day 4

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see.

1) A new layout for my LJ. Don't get me wrong, I adore the one I have and I'd like to have the coding saved in a word doc before it gets changed, but I do bore easily and in the past have changed my layout seasonally. So really seasonal H/D layouts. I'd love one for each season…or something like that.

2) Art or podfic of any of my stories. The best place to find them all is on AO3. So consider this blanket permission to create art or to podfic anything there. ♥

3) Fic written just for me and not like fest related. Lol. My birthday is some time off, so you have plenty of time to plan. :P

4) Rec me your go to fic/fics. That one fic that draws you to reread it over and over and over. Or maybe you have more than one…
I can handle major character death IF I know it's coming. Like if it's intended to be a shock at the end…I can't read it unless you spoil it for me. Not a huge fan of PWP or dystopian fics.
Pairings: OTP is Harry/Draco – but will also read: Harry/Charlie, Draco/Charlie, Harry/Severus and Hermione/Severus.

Mine will all be H/D recs.

This is the one I love and dread in equal measure. There is so much good fic out there...old stuff, new stuff... it's always so had to narrow it down to just 3. *sigh*

First...anything by femmequixotic...anything. But especially Black Coffee On a Lonely Night - this was one of the very first H/D fics I read and it's stayed with me all these years. One day - there will be a sequel to it...I've been promised. Do note - it's Non-magical AU *in case that's not your cuppa*

Next...If Wishes Were Children and it's sequels. This story holds a very special place in my heart, as it was written for me for a fest nearly 10 years ago. Because of it - I became dear friends with oldenuf2nb *and not it's not the same fic as my last snowflake post. lol*

Finally...Blood and Fire - currently anon - written for the hd_erised fest. Amazing story with brilliant characterizations and plot.

I could go on and on and on....but there are 3 for this year.

So many favorite memories, it's hard to choose. But I think one of the ones that was life-changing revolves around a fest. I'd written a piece for a fest that had a minor OC whose name ended up being nearly identical to another fandom writer's RL name. Thru the mod, I found out this person was really shaken by that and we ended up talking online about it. Now she's one of my very best friends in the world. ♥

As far as a lovely comment...I truly treasure every single comment anyone ever post on a fic of mine. Well except one or two. lol

Harry idly plays with Draco's hair as the blonde hums, muttering softly about his worries for the coming holidays as Harry soothes fingers through hair soft as down. They fall asleep soon after, lulled by the security of their own home. Their window remains open even as they rest, a breeze flitting through the room as the stars kiss their way across the sleep soft lovers.

Several months ago I commissioned the talented citrus_lime to create art for noeon's fabulous fic The Magic of the Holidays, or, How I Survived the Gringotts Holiday Helpdesk.

Summary: Draco’s an Assistant Cursebreaker at Gringotts, Harry’s an Auror. They receive the unwanted task of troubleshooting malfunctioning magical objects at the Gringotts holiday help desk. Together. The only question is whether they will kill each other before the magical objects succeed in killing them.

Why I loved it:
This fic is so much fun. Draco's voice in it is perfect and has just the right amount of Malfoy snark. It's filled with wonderful charmed objects, Harry acting first and thinking later and ridiculously bad hats.
The entire premise is original and filled with creative magic.

What started as a delightfully dirty one-shot for the hp_kinkfest femmequixotic's Can't Get You Out of My Head has turned into an epic series titled: Tales from the Special Branch.

I'm not talented enough to make a cool photo board for this post – but trust me, my love for this series still knows no bounds. And while I'm lucky enough to be a beta for this – I'd be pimping it anyway. :D

So I'm going to cheat and use the story board femmequixotic created.

This is Harry and Draco at their best and worst. Throw in Blaise and Pansy and a cast of other characters (including Harry's ex-boyfriend) and you've got an amazing story. femmequixotic in on Part 3 of the series and it's updated weekly. So do yourself a favor and give it a try. Oh and if it needs a disclaimer about the infidelity – it's technically Harry/OMC – but involves Draco.

These Secrets in Me WIP – [180k so far – NC-17]

Summary:

Auror Special Branch team seven-four-alpha--Sergeant Draco Malfoy, Constable Pansy Parkinson, and Constable Blaise Zabini led by their SIO, Inspector Harry Potter--must handle personal and political fallout from the implication of Ministry employees and Aurors in the scandal around escaped Death Eaters and a Dementor uprising at Azkaban. On top of that, their original target, Antonin Dolohov, is in the wind.
With all the ruckus, it's a good thing they have help from Unspeakable Hermione Granger, American Unspeakable, Legilimens, and Harry's recent ex, Jake Durant, Blaise's legendary necromancer grandfather, Barachiel Dee, and his potions expert mother, Olivia Zabini. What could possibly go wrong with an army of best friends, ex-lovers, and family? Especially when you add the strong-willed Parkinson clan to the mix.
Meanwhile, troubling new leads arise, taking Our Team in a surprising direction.
And Draco, still hiding his relationship with his SIO from the upper echelons of the Auror force, is definitely not falling in love with Harry Potter along the way. Not at all. Don't be ridiculous.

For femmequixotic's birthday this year - I commissioned citrus_lime to do some art from femme's current brilliant WIP Lost In Your Arms.

If you're not reading it - you should. It's nearly all posted *the next to the last chapter will go up this Saturday*, so if you don't like a WIP...never fear - this will be finished.

In fact, it's the first book of a 3 part series!!! Anyway, this is a scene from the very beginning of the story...although the scene is sort of repeated in Chapter 7. lol

It's completely work-safe so I'm not putting it under a cut.

Potter sits down anyway and catches the barkeep's attention. "Two more, please?" He pushes a few Galleon coins across the smooth black marble bar top. He glances at Draco, and Draco's stomach flips in a most disconcerting way. Potter's golden-brown skin gleams beneath the club lights, bright sparkles of pink and violet flashing off his round glasses and casting an almost otherworldly sheen across his cheekbones.

I have the extreme honor of helping to beta femmequixotic's latest EPIC fic Lost In Your Arms.

This story was born from her entry for LJ's hp_kinkfest Can't Get You Out of My Head. Now this itself was a brilliant fic, but she's expanded on it and created a series she's calling Tales From the Special Branch. And this is only PART ONE of THREE!!!!

Here's the summary for Lost in Your Arms: Three months after their brief encounter, Draco has almost forgotten about Potter--or so he tells himself. Really...you need to be reading this. Run!!! now to Lost In Your Arms and start reading. You won't regret it.

In full disclosure - there is what some would consider lightdom/sub and infidelity - but if whimpy me can handle it...you'll be fine. ♥
